Tree Planting and Wood Planting Conservation Day

Looking up into the treetops

We’re pretty big on charity work here at My Weekly, but last week we stuck our first spade into a dab of conservation!

Celebrity editor, Hannah, and designer, Bree, joined paper supplier, Premier Paper, for a fun-filled day of tree spotting and tree plotting with The (lovely) Woodland Trust.

On behalf of My Weekly, Hannah and Bree broke their backs planting a sturdy 23 sprouting cherry trees across Kinclaven Bluebell Woods! And they had a surprising amount of fun among all the mud and the worms!

Planting tree on a beautifully sunny day

Bree loved the experience.

I had a wonderful day out, planting trees and spending time in the fresh air and sunshine. It felt really good to give back to the environment!

There were around 30 volunteers from various other industries, and attendees from other DCT magazines including our friends over at The People’s Friend. Altogether, the group planted an impressive 500 trees in the early morning.

A walk through the beautiful forest of beech, birch, oak and fir followed. The sun was chasing the trees and birds were singing for spring.

Hannah said they discovered more about Kinclaven and Scottish woodland conservation than she expected.

“We didn’t just get to plant trees – we learnt a lot about the surrounding woodland, too. Like, the trust always fence off growing trees for about ten or more years to protect them from hungry deer and burrowing moles.

“We were also shown a patch of trees that had been planted ten years ago by a group of scouts. It was strange to think that will be our trees in 10 years’ time as well.

It was such a good experience and we were well looked after too, so I’d recommend everyone to try their hand at volunteering with The Woodland Trust.

A beautiful wood

In May, we hear the woodland of Kinclaven boasts the biggest and boldest bluebell floor on display in Scotland! So get it in your diaries now!
