  • If there’s limescale on the loo bowl, enamel bath and sink, dampen a pumice stone and rub until it’s gone. Don’t worry – it won’t scratch, because pumice is harder than limescale yet softer than porcelain and enamel.

  • Don’t bother scrubbing away at a pot or roasting dish that’s covered in baked-on grime. Fill it with enough hot water to cover the stains, add a handful of biological washing power, bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Then leave it to soak for a few hours and all will come off easily.
  • Scrub your wooden chopping board after use with hot soapy water; rinse with hot running water. Never leave to soak – it’ll crack. Dry with paper towels to avoid adding germs from a used tea towel. Then leave it to air, resting edgeways.

  • If you ever spill nail polish on your clothes, leave it to dry and then rub gently with an emery board.
  • A shower curtain soon attracts soap scum and mould at the base. Put in the washing machine, with a couple of towels, at 40ºC, using biological detergent. Hang directly from the machine. If the mould is very bad, pre-soak overnight in a bleach solution – half a cupful to a bucket of water – then wash as above.
