Trying to figure all the in-words and jargon relating to sleep can be tricky so we’ve come up with a handy list of some of the most used and least understood words!

Sleep Hygiene

Sleep Hygiene is just a term used meaning all the good habits that you should in order to get a good sleep and sleeping pattern.

Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese term used to describe the energy of a room. A bedroom with good Feng Shui is apparently conducive of a good night’s sleep.

Circadian Rhythm

A Circadian Rhythm is the term used to describe your 24-hour body clock. Your Circadian Rhythm basically dictates how alert and sleepy you are.

Blue Light

Blue Light is the light emitted by electronic devices and energy efficient lightbulbs. It can throw you off as the unnatural light can trick your body clock into thinking its day time, thusly wakening you up.

Melatonin

Melatonin is the hormone produced that regulates your sleep and wakefulness. It can also be taken as a supplement to help combat insomnia.

Sleep Quality

This means how good your sleep is. Having alcohol before bed may help you drift off but it will stop you falling into a deep sleep, thusly having a bad effect on your sleep quality.

Sleep Debt

Your body needs about 50 hours of sleep a week, get less than this and you’ll be in sleep debt to your body, and as a result you won’t be able to function at 100%.
